“Find yourself a suitcase. If there’s anything you want in this life, pack it in there because you’re never coming back.”
This was just a great episode, a solid one-two punch to get the season started. I loved who showed up at the end.
Let’s get our stories straight
It is right after the O6 left the island and the helicopter crashed. The O6 are chillaxin’ on Penny’s boat discussing the details of the lie. Everyone agrees they must do it, except Hurley, who wants to tell the truth. He begs Sayid to back him up, but Sayid refuses. “Dude, I’m gonna remember this.” Hurley says. “Someday you’re gonna need my help and I’m gonna say no.”
Fire Island
Island Daniel returns to the beach where Rose and Bernard are bickering over how to start a fire with Frogurt. I must admit, Rose is getting more shrill with each passing episode and I have found Bernard distasteful ever since he spilled his guts to Mr. Friendly at the end of Season three, so I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I was a little disappointed that they weren’t on the freighter when it exploded.
Juliet is evaluating the zodiac, which she deems to be intact. “It looks like whatever was with us when we shifted stays with us.” Everyone looks to Daniel for answers but Daniel needs to do some calculations which he seems in no hurry to do. Meanwhile, Miles is hungry and goes to look for food.
Charlotte is exhibiting some disturbing Minkowski-esque time traveling symptoms and Daniel tries to reassure her, Bernard is still trying to light the fire and Miles comes back into camp with a boar. He found it by tracking it with his Spidey sence indicating that it had died three hours ago. When he asks if anyone has a knife, it sends Frogurt over the edge. “Sure, right over there next to the cuisineart.” Frogurt’s hysteria grows exponentially as the others try to calm him. “We don’t have anything!” He freaks. “We can’t even get FIRE!” And right on cue, here come the flaming arrows out of the jungle, thankfully, one right into Frogurt’s chest. Frogurt was promising to shape up into one of those annoying peripheral characters like Nikki or Paolo, so thank God he met a quick end.
The survivors run through the jungle with the attackers in hot pursuit. Juliet stops to help a fallen comrade, but Sawyer pulls her away saying “It’s too late!” They hide, but are found, not by the Others, who we assume initiated this attack, but by Mercenary types who want to know what they are doing on THEIR island. They are going to cut Juliet’s hand off when they themselves are attacked from the Jungle. It’s Locke to the rescue.
Reunion
Kate on the run passes Hurley. Desperate, wants to call Jack, but thinks better of it and hangs up. No sooner does she do that, than the phone rings, unknown caller. Whoever it is is in L.A. and wants to meet Kate. Kate is agreeable, says she’ll see her in a half hour.
Kate arrives at Sun’s hotel and tells Sun about the lawyers and the blood tests. “Somebody knows we are lying,” she tells Sun. Sun tells Kate that since they did not tell her who the client was and they approached her at home, they are not interested in exposing the lie; they are only interested in getting Aaron. “You need to take care of them, “ Sun tells her. “Wouldn’t you do anything to keep Aaron with you?” Indignant, Kate asks, ‘What kind of a person do you think I am?” Remembering their last moments on the freighter, Sun tells her “I think you are the kind of person who can make tough decisions.”
Renegades
In the present, Hurley is driving recklessly down the street with an unconscious Sayid (from the dart in his neck from last episode) when he attracts the attention of the cops. Hurley pulls over and collects himself. The cop comes up and it’s **gasp!** Ana Lucia who is just as pleasant in death as she was in life. “What the hell are you doing?” asks. She the proceeds to tell Hurley to get his act together, remain calm, buy new clothes, find a safe place to hide and avoid the cops at all costs. “You getting’ all this?” she asks. When Hurley nods, she goes to leave then stops and adds, “Oh yeah. Libby says hi.”
Hurley arrives back at his house and interrupts his dad is watching Expose. (Ugh!Does this mean we haven’t seen the last of Nikki and Paolo?) Hurley tells his dad he’s in danger that someone is trying to kill him. Meanwhile, Hurley is all over the news and the cops stake out his house and Sayid is still passed out on the couch. Hurley decides that he needs to get Sayid some medical attention, so he has his dad bring him to Jack. Against Cheech’s advice, Jack takes Sayid to the hospital, but not before calling Ben and telling him that he has Sayid. Cheech warns jack to stay away from his son.
Ben goes into a butcher shop where he is obviously on friendly terms with Jill, the butchy butcher. He tells her he has something that she needs to keep safe. “Is it what I think it is?” Jill asks. “Yes, and if we don’t keep him safe everything we’re planning to do will fail.”
Jack is successful bringing Sayid back, but Sayid almost kills him for his troubles.. But while Sayid and Jack are celebrating Sayid’s sudden, yet violent recovery, Ben makes an appearance to Hurley. He makes his pitch to Hurley, telling him everything he wants to hear “You won’t have to worry anymore, you won’t have to lie anymore” and you can just see that Hurley wants to go for it—then at the last minute: “Never, dude.” and Hurley runs outside and gives himself up to the waiting police, confessing to “three or four murders—whatever, dude. I did ‘em all.”
Cut to a basement with odd equipment. A pendulum swings back and forth while calculations are being made on a blackboard then a computer. The occupant climbs up a set of steps into a church, where Ben is lighting candles. She drops her hood and turns around to reveal herself: It’s the shopkeeper from season three who would not sell Desmond an engagement ring for Penny while Desmond was shifting in time after the hatch blew. She tells Ben she’s made some progress, but that they only have 70 hourse for the window. Ben panics. “But I just lost Reyes!” Our shopkeeper is having none of it. “You have to get him back.” “What if I don’t?” Ben asks.
“Then God help us all.”

Update
After sleeping on this episode, I have two thoughts:
1. Another reason to detest Frogurt and celebrate his quick demise: He gave Sawyer a shirt. Unfortunately, Frogurt was killed a few minutes too late.
2. Our shopkeeper/Phyllis Doyle lookalike who was busily calculating the position of the island in her Templar Knights dungeon is possibly/likely Daniel Faraday's mother. The one Faraday told Desmond to seek out.

I am so happy that the new season has begun! Thank you for your synopsis after each episode. You are a much sharper chickadee than I am!
Can't wait to read your blog every week!
